8  And Aḇraham said, “My son, Elohim does provide for Himself the lamb for an ascending offering.” And the two of them went together.
9  And they came to the place which Elohim had commanded him, and Aḇraham built a slaughter-place there and placed the wood in order. And he bound Yitsḥaq his son and laid him on the slaughter-place, upon the wood.
10  And Aḇraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son,
11  but the Messenger of יהוה called to him from the heavens and said, “Aḇraham, Aḇraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
12  And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy, nor touch him. For now I know that you fear Elohim, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
13  And Aḇraham lifted his eyes and looked and saw behind him a ram caught in a bush by its horns, and Aḇraham went and took the ram and offered it up for an ascending offering instead of his son.

14  “And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall break forth to the west and to the east, to the north and the south. And all the clans of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your seed.
15  “And see, I am with you and shall guard you wherever you go, and shall bring you back to this land. For I am not going to leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”
16  And Ya‛aqoḇ awoke from his sleep and said, “Truly, יהוה is in this place, and I did not know it.”
17  And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of Elohim, and this is the gate of the heavens!”
18  And Ya‛aqoḇ rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a standing column, and poured oil on top of it.
19  And he called the name of that place Běyth Ěl, however, the name of that city had been Luz previously.
20  And Ya‛aqoḇ made a vow, saying, “Seeing Elohim is with me, and has kept me in this way that I am going, and has given me bread to eat and a garment to put on –
21  when I have returned to my father’s house in peace, and יהוה has been my Elohim,
22  then this stone which I have set as a standing column shall be Elohim’s house, and of all that You give me, I shall certainly give a tenth to You.”

2Sa 24:18-25  And Gaḏ came that day to Dawiḏ and said to him, “Go up, raise a slaughter-place to יהוה on the threshing-floor of Arawnah the Yeḇusite.”
19  And Dawiḏ, according to the word of Gaḏ, went up as יהוה commanded.
20  And Arawnah looked and saw the sovereign and his servants coming toward him. And Arawnah went out and bowed before the sovereign with his face to the ground.
21  And Arawnah said, “Why has my master the sovereign come to his servant?” And Dawiḏ said, “To buy the threshing-floor from you, to build a slaughter-place to יהוה, so that the plague be withdrawn from the people.”
22  And Arawnah said to Dawiḏ, “Let my master the sovereign take and offer that which seems good to him. Here are cattle for ascending offering, and threshing implements and the yokes of the cattle for wood.
23  “All these, O sovereign, Arawnah has given to the sovereign.” And Arawnah said to the sovereign, “יהוה your Elohim accept you!”
24  And the sovereign said to Arawnah, “No, let me buy it from you for a price, for certain. I am not offering ascending offerings to יהוה my Elohim without cost.” So Dawiḏ bought the threshing-floor and the cattle for fifty sheqels of silver.
25  And Dawiḏ built a slaughter-place to יהוה there, and offered ascending offerings and peace offerings. And יהוה answered the prayers for the land, and the plague was withdrawn from Yisra’ěl.

Rabbi Avraham Ben Ya’acov on ‘Even Shetiyah’ the Foundation Stone at the centre of the Dome of the Rock on the Har HaBait:

‘The Foundation Stone’

The holiest spot on the Temple Mount is the place where the Holy of Holies — the inner sanctum of the Temple — stood. The floor of the Holy of Holies consisted of an immense natural stone called Even Shetiyah, the “Foundation Stone”. On it stood the golden Ark of the Covenant containing Moses’ Tablets of Stone and covered by the golden Kaporet with its two cherubs or angels with outspread wings.

The significance of the Foundation Stone is explained in the following passage from Mishkeney Elyon (“Dwellings of the Most High”) by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto on the kabbalistic meaning of the Temple and its design.

When the Creator wanted to create this world He included everything that was to come into being in ten great luminaries [the Sefirot] from which all created beings emerged like branches coming out of the trunk of the tree. Thus there is nothing that does not have its place in the Supreme Chariot.

The last of these ten lights is called Shechinah (“The Indwelling Presence” [Sefirah of Malchut, Kingship]), and everything that exists is rooted there. Understand this well: besides the root that each thing which exists has in the other higher lights, it also has its root in the Shechinah, which is metaphorically called the Mother of Children.

Know that there is one particular place known to her in which all these roots are merged in unity. That place is the root of all things. There the Earth is rooted and all that is in it, the Heavens and the Heavens of the Heavens and all their hosts.

And at this meeting point where all the different roots come together in one place, in the middle can be seen a certain “stone”. This stone is most precious. It includes every kind of charm and beauty. This is called Evven Shetiyah, the Foundation Stone. And thus there actually is such a stone in our world here down below in the place of the Holy of Holies in the Temple.

From this stone tracks and pathways extend in all directions leading to all the individual things that exist. Where these paths and tracks start leading off from the stone in all directions they are major general paths. Every single item in creation knows its own path and from these general paths each item takes its specific share of nourishment given to it from the King. Further away from the stone, these major paths divide into countless numbers of smaller tracks, for here are the specific roots of all things from the greatest to the smallest, and every single item has its own track. But the ultimate root of all these tracks and pathways is to be found at the place I mentioned.

Where they all come together in the stone that is in the middle of this place, from there the Creator watches over them and examines all of them with a single glance. Of this it is written: “He fashions the hearts of them all together and discerns all their doings” (Psalms 33:15). For this stone is the very heart of the universe and there everything is joined together in unity under the watch of the King.

Mishkeney Elyon

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov sheds further light on the Foundation Stone:

The world has a foundation stone. Channels emanate from this stone, reaching every land. The Midrash teaches us that the wise King Solomon knew the details of these channels and was therefore able to plant all types of trees. If people knew the exact location of these subterranean channels, they would be able to grow fruit trees even in these lands. They could grow many trees that never grow here now. Each channel has the power to stimulate a particular species. Even if a particular channel does not pass through our land, all channels are intertwined and flow into each other. If one knew the exact place, he could plant any type of tree. If one knew the location of all channels, he could dig a well and know where to plant trees around it. He could then make any type of tree grow. The foundation stone of the world constantly rises and descends. If one knows its position then he knows what to plant at a particular time. All these things are concealed from the world, for some things may not be revealed. People say that the world is gaining knowledge. But earlier generations made the primary discoveries, and this took the greatest wisdom. Later generations make discoveries only because earlier ones prepared the way.

Rabbi Nachman’s Wisdom #60

These teachings of Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto and Rebbe Nachman add a new dimension to the concept of energy lines around Earth as discussed in a number of contemporary scientific and spiritual works. The place that Jacob reached is the brain and nerve-center of the entire Earth, with nerves spreading out from it in every direction linking everywhere in creation.

Jacob’s quest, then, was for the top, the brain, the “head” of creation. In the account of Jacob’s dream the Hebrew word Rosh, “head”, appears no less than four times in eight verses. Jacob was in search of the centerpoint and source of all creation, Bereishit (Genesis 1:1). The universe is like a House, a Bayit, fashioned by God as a dwelling-place for His glorious Presence. Jacob was in search of the Rosh Bayit, Head of the House. The Hebrew letters of Rosh Bayit are an anagram of Bereishit, the first word of the Torah, from which all else emanates. Jacob was searching for the point at which the physical world connects with its source, the “Gate of Heaven”.’ (Source)

Gaon of Vilna in Sefer Kol HaTor: ‘“Psa 24:3 Who does go up into the mountain of HaShem? And who does stand in His set-apart place?” Hebrew (first part): מי־יעלה בהר־יהוה referring to the ingathering of exiles. The initial letters —  מב”י — are initials of Messiah ben Yosef. “Psa. 24:3 ……And who does stand in His set-apart place?” referring to the building ‘initial letters, are initials of Messiah ben Yosef’. Wherever the word “does stand in” is mentioned, it refers to the line of Messiah ben Yosef, as in the phrase “Gen. 37:7 ……my sheaf rose” “Psa 24:5  He receives a blessing from HaShem……” refers to something that carries with it a blessing, such as planting ‘the initial letters are the initials of Messiah ben Yosef, though in reverse order — מבי. And in the verses:

Jer 31:20-21 “Is Ephrayim a precious son to Me, a child of delights? For though I spoke against him, I still remembered him. That is why My affections were deeply moved for him. I have great compassion for him,” declares HaShem. 21 “Set up signposts, make landmarks; set your heart toward the highway, the way in which you went. Turn back, O maiden of Yisra’ěl, turn back to these cities of yours!”

“turn back to these cities of yours!” “build Jerusalem,” “Psa 102:13-14  You Yourself shall arise And have compassion on Tsiyon, For the time to favor her, The appointed time, has come. 14 For Your servants have been pleased with her stones, And they favor her dust. ” ‘To favor’ refers to planting as it states, “And they favor her dust.” Each one of them accords with the gematria of “testimony in Yosef” that refers to Messiah ben Yosef. Also, these three tasks were given to Cyrus as it states: “Isa 44:24-28  Thus saith HaShem, thy Redeemer, and He that formed thee from the womb: I am HaShem, that makes all things; that stretched forth the heavens alone; that spread abroad the earth by Myself; 25  That frustrated the tokens of the imposters, and makes diviners mad; that turned wise men backward, and makes their knowledge foolish;

26  That confirmed the word of His servant, and performed the counsel of His messengers; that saith of Jerusalem: ‘She shall be inhabited’; and of the cities of Judah: ‘They shall be built, and I will raise up the waste places thereof’; 27  That saith to the deep: ‘Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers’; 28  That saith of Cyrus: ‘He is My shepherd, and shall perform all My pleasure’; even saying of Jerusalem: ‘She shall be built’; and to the temple: ‘My foundation shall be laid.’”

‘I am HaShem Who confirms the word of His servant, and fulfills the counsel of his messengers; Who says of Jerusalem: ‘It will be settled’… Who says to the depths, ‘Dry up, and I will dry out your rivers’. Who says of Cyrus, ‘my shepherd’; he will fulfill all my desire, ” etc. According to the explanation of the Gaon, the word in Gematria equals 131 because the purpose of building Eretz Israel is to drive out from the gates of Jerusalem. And therefore this is the mission of Cyrus as part of the mission of Messiah ben Yosef from the left side, which means the quality of Din. The might of Messiah ben Yosef lies in the miraculous assistance he can offer in connection with the ingathering of exiles that will come about when the awakening comes from below.

  1. Act and be successful. One of the special characteristics of Messiah ben Yosef is his successfulness when he acts, as it says with regard to Yosef (son of Jacob), “Gen 39:3 And his master saw that HaShem was with him and that HaShem made all he did to prosper in his hand.” The following great idea of the Gaon became known: there are only two commandments which a person’s entire body has to enter in order to fulfill them–the commandment of the Mishcan, and that of Eretz Israel. This is hinted at in the verse, “Psa 76:2 And His booth is in Shalěm, And His dwelling place in Tsiyon.” and the Gaon adds that the commandment regarding Sukkoth requires you to ‘do’ that is, to fulfill a positive commandment, not to take from what is done. Likewise, with regard to Zion. As is stated in the Midrash on the verse: “a redeemer will come to Zion.” As long is Zion is not yet built, the redeemer will not come. As Our Sages of blessed memory said (Megillah 17b), “after Jerusalem is built, the son of David (Messiah) will come.” According to the Midrash, the son of David will not come until Jerusalem is built.
  2. Isa 60:22 “The little shall become a thousand, and the small one a strong nation. I, HaShem, shall hasten it in its time.” “in its time, I will hasten it.” Our Sages interpreted this principle to mean that, if they (the People of Israel) merit it, I will hasten it the Redemption; if not, I will bring it in its own time (Sanhedrin 98a). Regarding this, the Gaon commented that after all, the verse should be interpreted literally. According to the plain interpretation, even if the Redemption comes at its proper time, I will hasten it. When? –”when the smallest will become a thousand and the youngest a mighty nation.” The words smallest and youngest refer to Efraim (Note Translator: All the Lost Sheep from the House of Israel), who is Messiah ben Yosef. It is known that the highest level of Messiah ben Yosef (Translator note: think about the teaching about ‘General Yechida’?), who will come when the awakening comes from below, is 1000 less one, or 999 in the sefira of Yesod. When the smallest one will become 1000, that is, when his deeds reach the level just below 1000, then – “Isa 60:22 “The little shall become a thousand, and the small one a strong nation. I, HaShem, shall hasten it in its time.”

This is also the meaning of “Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine, and repayment, At the time their foot slips; For near is the day of their calamity, And the matters prepared are hastening to them.”


Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead

Num 32:1-42 And the children of Re’uḇěn and the children of Gaḏ had much livestock, a large number. And they saw the land of Ya‛zěr and the land of Gil‛aḏ and saw that the place was a place for livestock.

2 So the children of Gaḏ and the children of Re’uḇěn came and spoke to Mosheh, and to El‛azar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,

3 “Ataroth, and Diḇon, and Ya‛zěr, and Nimrah, and Ḥeshbon, and El‛alěh, and Seḇam, and Neḇo, and Be‛on,

4 the land which HaShem had stricken before the congregation of Yisra’ěl, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”

5 And they said, “If we have found favour in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as a possession, and do not let us pass over the Yarděn.”

6 And Mosheh said to the children of Gaḏ and to the children of Re’uḇěn, “Are your brothers to go into the battle while you yourselves sit here?

7 “Now why do you discourage the heart of the children of Yisra’ěl from passing over into the land which HaShem has given them?

8 “Thus your fathers did when I sent them away from Qaḏěsh Barněa to see the land.

9 “For when they went up to the wadi Eshkol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Yisra’ěl, so that they did not go into the land which HaShem had given them.

10 “Then the displeasure of HaShem burned on that day, and He swore an oath, saying,

11 Not one of the men who came up from Mitsrayim, from twenty years old and above, is to see the land of which I swore to Aḇraham, Yitsḥaq, and Ya‛aqoḇ, because they did not follow Me completely,

12 except Kalěḇ son of Yephunneh, the Qenizzite, and Yehoshua son of Nun, for they have followed HaShem completely.’

13 “So the displeasure of HaShem burned against Yisra’ěl, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the eyes of HaShem was destroyed.

14 “And see, you have risen in your father’s place, an increase of men, sinners, to add still more the burning displeasure of HaShem against Yisra’ěl.

15 “For if you turn away from following Him, He shall once again leave them in the wilderness, and you shall destroy all these people.”

16 Then they came near to him and said, “Let us build sheep-enclosures here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones,

17 but let us ourselves be armed, hastening before the children of Yisra’ěl until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall dwell in the walled cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

18 “We shall not return to our homes until every one of the children of Yisra’ěl has received his inheritance.

19 “For we shall not inherit with them on the other side of the Yarděn and beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Yarděn.”

20 And Mosheh said to them, “If you make this promise: if you arm yourselves before HaShem for battle,

21 and all your armed ones pass over the Yarděn before HaShem until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,

22 and the land has been subdued before HaShem, then afterward you shall return, and be guiltless before HaShem and before Yisra’ěl. And this land shall be your possession before HaShem.

23 “But if you do not do so, then see, you shall sin against HaShem, and know: your sin is going to find you out.

24 “Build cities for your little ones and enclosures for your sheep and do what you have promised.”

25 And the children of Gaḏ and the children of Re’uḇěn spoke to Mosheh, saying, “Your servants are going to do as my master commands.

26 “Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock are going to be there in the cities of Gil‛aḏ,

27 but your servants are passing over, every armed one of the army, before HaShem, to battle, as my master says.”

28 And Mosheh gave command concerning them to El‛azar the priest, to Yehoshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Yisra’ěl.

29 And Mosheh said to them, “If the children of Gaḏ and the children of Re’uḇěn pass over the Yarděn with you, every man armed for battle before HaShem, and the land has been subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gil‛aḏ as a possession.

30 “But if they do not pass over armed with you, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Kena‛an.”

31 Then the children of Gaḏ and the children of Re’uḇěn answered, saying, “As HaShem has said to your servants, so we do.

32 “We ourselves are passing over armed before HaShem into the land of Kena‛an, but the possession of our inheritance remains with us beyond the Yarděn.”

33 So Mosheh gave to the children of Gaḏ, to the children of Re’uḇěn, and to half the tribe of Menashsheh, son of Yosěph, the reign of Siḥon sovereign of the Amorites and the reign of Oḡ sovereign of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the land round about.

34 And the children of Gaḏ built Diḇon and Ataroth and Aro‛ěr,

35 and Atroth, Shophan and Ya‛zěr and Yoḡbehah,

36 and Běyth Nimrah and Běyth Haran, walled cities, and enclosures for sheep.

37 And the children of Re’uḇěn built Ḥeshbon and El‛alěh and Qiryathayim,

38 Nebo and Ba‛al Me‛on – the names being changed – and Shiḇmah. And they gave other names to the cities which they built.

39 And the sons of Maḵir son of Menashsheh went to Gil‛aḏ and took it and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.

40 So Mosheh gave Gil‛aḏ to Maḵir, son of Menashsheh, and he dwelt in it.

41 And Ya’ir son of Menashsheh went and took its small towns and called them Ḥawoth Ya’ir.

42 And Noḇaḥ went and took Qenath and its villages, and he called it Noḇaḥ, after his own name.

 

Jos 4:12-14 And the sons of Re’uḇěn, and the sons of Gaḏ, and half the tribe of Menashsheh passed over in fives before the children of Yisra’ěl, as Mosheh had spoken to them.

13 About forty thousand armed ones of the army passed over before HaShem for battle, to the desert plains of Yeriḥo.

14 On that day HaShem made Yehoshua great before the eyes of all Yisra’ěl. And they feared him, as they had feared Mosheh, all the days of his life.

 

Jos 13:24-32 And Mosheh gave to the tribe of Gaḏ, to the children of Gaḏ for their clans:

25 and their border was Ya‛zěr, and all the cities of Gil‛aḏ, and half the land of the children of Ammon as far as Aro‛ěr, which is before Rabbah,

26 and from Ḥeshbon to Ramath Mitspeh and Betonim, and from Maḥanayim to the border of Deḇir,

27 and in the valley Běyth Haram, and Běyth Nimrah, and Sukkoth, and Tsaphon, the rest of the reign of Siḥon sovereign of Ḥeshbon, the Yarděn being its border, as far as the edge of the Sea of Kinnereth, beyond the Yarděn eastward.

28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gaḏ for their clans, the cities and their villages.

29 And Mosheh gave to half the tribe of Menashsheh, and it was for half the tribe of the children of Menashsheh for their clans:

30 and their border was from Maḥanayim, all Bashan, all the reign of Oḡ sovereign of Bashan, and all the small towns of Ya’ir which are in Bashan, sixty cities;

31 and the half of Gil‛aḏ, and Ashtaroth and Eḏre‛i, cities of the reign of Oḡ in Bashan, were for the children of Maḵir son of Menashsheh, to the half of the children of Maḵir for their clans.

32 These Mosheh gave as an inheritance in the desert plains of Mo’aḇ beyond the Yarděn, by Yeriḥo eastward.
